An evaluation of the pay-per-view pay-per-action Samsung Pay, implemented by Thales on the smartphones Galaxy S8 and S8 +, made it possible for the app to be certified on these devices.

Thanks to the security reviews conducted by the Thales teams in Toulouse (France), it is possible to use the secure payment networks of all major credit cards, including Mastercard and Visa, on the recently introduced Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 +.

With the HCE feature Samsung Pay app, users can keep their bank and credit card information on their smartphone. Then, with the contactless payment system that uses the NFC and MST techniques, cash payments can be made. This payment method is currently rolled out for Samsung users worldwide and is supported by over a thousand banks and credit card companies worldwide.

The basis for the evaluation process was the trust relationship between Thales, Mastercard and Visa, which was built up by more than ten years of collaboration. Thales operates one of the first laboratories accredited by Visa in 2014 to perform various security evaluations of HCE based banking applications. The Thales laboratory for cyber security in Toulouse has been accredited by Mastercard and other payment networks since 2015.

Thales has been working with Samsung for many years to provide critical cryptographic security in the manufacturing process for mobile phones and other smart devices.

The development of Thales’s expertise in the field of contactless payment is a logical step forward in the Group’s leading position in cyber security for the banking sector. Thales contributes to the security of 80% of all payment transactions and provides data protection for 19 of the 20 largest banks in the world.
