Technology For All – Creating An Inclusive Digital Society

The least developed countries (LDCs) lag behind in terms of technological advancement and effective implementation. These nations face economic, political, and social obstacles that prevent them from enjoying a satisfying, secure, affordable, and enriching online experience. According to the International Telecommunication Union, only 36% of the population in LDCs is projected to use the Internet in 2022, compared to the global average of 66%. It is surprising to note that 17% of the population does not have access to fixed or mobile broadband networks, and the remaining 47% encounters obstacles primarily related to affordability.

This year’s World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD), celebrated on May 17 every year, is centered around the theme of empowering the least developed countries through information and communication technologies. The objective is to enable these countries to utilize emerging technologies such as AI and the Internet of Things (IoT) to accomplish their sustainable development objectives and bridge the digital divide. This endeavour aims to increase consciousness regarding the transformative power of the Internet and other ICTs in promoting a society that is more equitable and inclusive. By connecting those who are disconnected, ICTs hold the capability to unlock a realm of knowledge, foster innovation, and create opportunities for individuals and communities alike. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, narrowing the digital divide is crucial for a more equitable and inclusive society, enabling everyone to reap the benefits of digital technologies irrespective of their geographical location or economic status.
