ATSC 3.0 Based UHD IBB to Be Demonstrated at IBC 2016

214

At IBC 2016 on the EUROFINS DIGITAL TESTING stand (5 C30), Korea’s Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), Samsung Electronics and the Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI) will demonstrate the first implementation of the Korean UHD IBB (Integrated Broadband Broadcast) standard – based on ATSC 3.0 and HbbTV 2.0.The recently published Korean UHD IBB standard enables the provision of catch-up services, Video on Demand (VoD), an Advanced Service Guide and companion screen services. The companion screen services will connect mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets with the TV to extend the user experience to include multi-view and multi-user applications.

On the Eurofins Digital Testing stand the companion screen capabilities will be demonstrated using examples of MBC’s IBB-enabled UHD broadcast content including live music performances and drama presentations.

To illustrate the capabilities of the companion screen application, visitors will be able to explore multi-view services. For example, when watching the live music show ‘Show! Music Core’ additional video clips can be accessed and displayed on a compatible companion screen.

The IBB standard also permits personalised services, based on information provided by individual users. Depending on the user’s preferences these might give the viewer extra program information or display recommendations for additional content relevant to the main show content that is aligned to a viewer’s interests. This has been achieved by the inclusion of an Organiser Engine, developed by KETI, which is employed to identify and supply content of interest based on individual viewer’s preferences in real-time.
