Telefónica has entered into a partnership with Nokia and Ericsson for the initial deployment of 5G capabilities in Spain’s Segovia and Talavera de la Reina cities – a part of Telefónica’s 5G Technological Cities project that will lead the way towards 5G throughout the country.

By 2020, Segovia and Talavera de la Reina will be turned into 5G living laboratories with multiple pioneering capabilities such as initial 5G capacity, the deployment of the new 5G network and the development of 5G use cases that will allow citizens and enterprises to gain benefits from the new technology. The new mobile generation will increase the speed and obtain peaks from 1 Gbps to up to 10 Gbps and reduce the latency.

While Ericsson is promoting the standardization of 5G, Nokia’s standard-based 5G technology will be compatible with the future 5G devices and services, establishing it at the forefront of 5G commercialisation.

The 5G use cases will be developed with concept tests on the new services, products, experiences and business models. The tests include the work performed together with SEAT and FICOSA on connected car applications. These applications intend to improve safety and traffic management. The potential use cases enabled by 5G arrival include the massification of the IoT, the automation and digitisation of industrial processes, remote management of critical processes, telemedicine, mobile gaming and remote control of drones.

Luis Miguel Gilpérez, CEO of Telefónica España, said: “With the 5G Technological Cities project, Telefónica is turning the technology of the future into reality and providing a constant service for people. This is why we will perform the technological deployment and use cases in parallel, so that we will serve people with the new technologies, one of Telefónica’s clear objectives”.
