Israel-based company specialises in small-cell modem, system design for base stations.

Qualcomm Inc. said it purchased chip maker DesignArt Networks, giving the company new system-on-chip and mobile offerings.

DesignArt, based in Ra’anana, Israel, focuses on small-cell modem and system design for cellular base stations and high-speed wireless infrastructure. Financial details of the deal weren’t disclosed.

“DesignArt and its products will both enhance and accelerate our initiatives to drive increased capacity and coverage in mobile networks,” said Craig Barratt, president of Qualcomm’s Atheros unit.

Qualcomm, which helped popularize a technology used in many cellphones called code-division multiple access, or CDMA, has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of rising demand for smartphones and other mobile devices.

Last month, the company said its fiscal third-quarter profit rose as the chip maker continued to see strong demand for its smartphone technology.

Qualcomm’s shares closed Thursday at $62.04 and were down two cents after hours. The stock is up 13% so far this year.
