Open RAN Architecture Transforming Telecom Markets

The telecommunications industry is currently undergoing a structural transition from proprietary, vendor-locked hardware to an open, software-defined ecosystem. By decoupling the hardware and software components of the radio access network, operators can foster a more competitive marketplace, accelerate the deployment of 5G infrastructure, and achieve a level of operational flexibility that is essential for the next generation of digital services.

Edge Data Centers Accelerate Low-Latency Networks

The centralization of computing power in distant cloud hubs is reaching its physical limits as the demand for real-time responsiveness in modern applications continues to soar. By relocating processing and storage to smaller, localized facilities at the network's periphery, organizations can drastically reduce transmission delays, enabling the next generation of industrial automation, immersive entertainment, and autonomous systems.

Trimble has partnered with KT Corporation in South Korea in a strategic partnership to roll out the Trimble RTX Fast network across the nation. The partnership will provide bundled telecom, correction and precise positioning services aimed at South Korean automotive OEMs as well as IoT providers.

Trimble’s real-time GNSS correction services, providing centimetre-level accuracy in positioning, are already in large-scale use throughout North America and Europe. With this new collaboration, the company is now expanding its presence in Asia as well, providing state-of-the-art positioning via IP/cellular and satellite delivery for the connected future.

“We are committed to growing and expanding our technology coverage to enable a more connected world of the future,” said Olivier Casabianca, vice president of advanced positioning at Trimble. “With an existing footprint in North America and Europe, we are building on our strategy to extend RTX Fast to other regions around the world.”

The Trimble RTX Fast network now extends across more than seven million square miles (18 million square kilometres) worldwide. The collaboration with KT will enable South Korean OEMs and IoT developers to leverage a single platform that enables next-generation applications, including ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communications, and smart city deployments.

KT Corporation’s widespread countrywide coverage—encompassing urban, rural, mountainous, and even island areas—provides a complement to Trimble’s technology in the form of robust and pervasive connectivity. This allows developers and manufacturers to readily test and deploy their systems over varying environments.

“With KT’s broad coverage of wired and wireless network infrastructure evenly distributed across Korea (urban, rural, mountainous, and island), and immediate access to the Trimble RTX Fast network, companies will be able to easily use, test and validate their automotive and IoT systems in South Korea,” said Wontae Kim, head of KT’s strategic customer business division. “Not only will this accelerate the development and deployment cycle, but it also ensures accuracy and access to positioning data they can trust.”

The combined solution will offer a number of advantages, such as direct integration with current IoT infrastructure, the convenience of buying correction services and connectivity in a bundled form, and one-stop access to local expertise and technical service.

As smart mobility, robotics, and infrastructure technologies develop further, the new partnership sets South Korea on track to become an innovation hub fuelled by the Trimble RTX Fast network.
