Verizon and Corning have announced a multi-year, multi-billion-dollar supply agreement covering more than 80 million miles of high-density optical fiber and connectivity solutions. The Verizon and Corning fiber agreement spans the period from 2027 through 2032 and is designed to support broadband expansion for homes and businesses as well as the long-haul connectivity backbone required for AI infrastructure and data center connectivity.
The announcement, made on September 8, 2026, deepens a relationship between the two companies that stretches back three decades. Under the terms of the deal, Corning will supply the optical fiber deployment needed for Verizon to pursue its broadband and AI connectivity objectives over the next several years.
Broadband Expansion and Converged Architecture
A significant portion of the fiber covered under the Verizon and Corning fiber agreement is intended to accelerate Verizon’s broadband expansion across the United States. The company has set a target of reaching 40 million to 50 million broadband passings, extending fiber-to-the-home and local business connectivity to communities nationwide. It is important to note that this figure represents a company target rather than an outcome that has already been achieved.
Verizon has outlined an architecture that aims to bring mobile connectivity, broadband, cell towers, enterprise data centers, and residential connectivity onto a common high-capacity backbone. This converged approach is designed to deliver a seamless experience for consumers and businesses, connecting them through a single fiber optic network regardless of whether they are at home or on the move.
The optical fiber deployment under this agreement will provide the physical foundation for that converged infrastructure, supporting both consumer broadband expansion and enterprise-grade connectivity requirements.
AI Infrastructure and Data Center Connectivity
Beyond broadband, the Verizon and Corning fiber agreement addresses the growing demand for data center connectivity driven by artificial intelligence workloads. Under its AI Connect strategy, Verizon is deploying ultra-dense cables across major long-haul corridors to connect data centers. Heavy AI workloads require substantial throughput and low latency, making high-density fiber essential to support the scale of large language models and other compute-intensive applications.
The fiber optic network enabled by this supply agreement is intended to serve as both the broadband expansion backbone and the long-haul AI infrastructure corridor. This multi-use approach means the same physical fiber assets will support consumer internet access, business services, and the interconnection of AI data centers.
Among the optical solutions referenced in the agreement is Corning’s Contour Flow Cable, a flexible ribbon cable that allows more optical fiber to be deployed within existing conduit pathways. This technology is designed to maximize the capacity and bandwidth of Verizon’s infrastructure investments.
The Verizon and Corning fiber agreement is also structured to support Corning’s continued scaling of its manufacturing footprint in the United States. By securing long-term supply commitments, the deal provides Corning with the certainty needed to invest in production capacity for the fiber, cable, and connectivity solutions that Verizon requires.
Kyle Malady, CEO of Verizon Business, said the agreement allows the company to continue building a converged architecture at scale, uniting mobile and broadband connectivity while building the high-capacity backbone that AI infrastructure demands. Mike O’Day, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Corning Optical Communications, noted that the partnership reflects the intersection of broadband expansion and AI connectivity as part of the same opportunity, with Corning manufacturing its optical innovations at scale in the United States.
