‘T Live Streaming’ improves user experience in mobile live video streaming by significantly reducing latency from 15 seconds to just three seconds

The technology, first applied to SPOTV, a channel on SK Broadband’s media platform ‘oksusu’, will be applied to other oksusu channels to allow more users to experience true real-time streaming services

Once standardized by MPEG in 2017, T Live Streaming is expected to play a pivotal role as the next-generation mobile protocol in the media industry

SK Telecom (NYSE:SKM) today announced that it has commercialized the world’s first true real-time mobile streaming technology. Named ‘T Live Streaming’, the technology has been applied to ‘SPOTV,’ a live sports streaming channel on SK Broadband’s mobile media platform called ‘oksusu.’

The company developed T Live Streaming by customizing ‘MPEG Media Transport (MMT),’ a standard developed by the Moving Picture Expert Group (MPEG)*, to the mobile network environment. T Live Streaming realizes real-time streaming by dramatically reducing latency from 15 seconds to 3 seconds.

* The Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) is a working group of ISO/IEC in charge of the development of international standards for compression, decompression, processing, and coded representation of moving pictures, audio and their combination

SK Telecom said that the technology will be applied to other oksusu channels to allow more users to experience true real-time streaming services. In addition, the technology can also be applied to Multi-Channel Networks’ platforms (e.g. individual broadcasting, game broadcasting, etc.) that value real-time feedback from viewers to not only reduce latency in live broadcasting, but also to increase interactivity with viewers.

Meanwhile, SK Telecom has been serving as the chair of the ‘MMT Sub Working Group’ since February 2015, and is working closely with deputy chairs including Samsung Electronics to promote the standardization of the T Live Streaming technology. Upon standardization by the end of 2017, the technology will serve a crucial role as the next-generation mobile protocol, replacing ‘MPEG-2 Transport Streaming’ and ‘Http Live Streaming, which were used as media transmission standard technologies over the past two decades.

“SK Telecom continues to enhance users’ mobile live video streaming experience through T Live Streaming, the enabler of true real-time mobile streaming services,” said Park Jin-hyo, Senior Vice President and Head of Network R&D Center at SK Telecom. “While promoting the international standardization of the technology, SK Telecom will also provide T Live Streaming SDK to allow developers to create diverse media solutions.”
