Cloud and Edge Networks Accelerated by Optical Links

The synergy between centralized data centers and decentralized edge nodes is critical for the next wave of digital transformation. By utilizing high-capacity optical links, operators are achieving the ultra-low latency and massive data transfer speeds required to support real-time applications and seamless global connectivity across diverse industries.

Optical Sensing Technologies Advancing Smart Networks

The integration of sophisticated sensors into the global fiber optic footprint is turning passive cables into an active, intelligent nervous system. These optical sensing technologies provide real-time monitoring of physical environments, enhancing the security and efficiency of smart networks while offering a scalable solution for modern telecom infrastructure health.

High Speed Data Centers Leveraging Optical Interconnects

The rapid expansion of cloud computing and artificial intelligence has pushed traditional data center architectures to their physical limits. By replacing copper-based connections with high-performance optical interconnects, modern facilities are achieving the throughput and efficiency required to handle massive workloads while maintaining the scalability necessary for future enterprise IT growth.

Future operator of space-based connection services Constellation Technologies & Operations (CTO) and neutral telecom infrastructure operator TDF sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

This creative strategic cooperation intends to combine Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) satellites as a complementing solution for terrestrial infrastructure.ย  The aim is to give telecom operators hybrid and strong connection that can satisfy the rising demand for low-latency, high-speed internetโ€”especially in rural areas or during major events.

This partnership combines TDF’s knowledge in managing secure terrestrial infrastructure with CTO’s experience building a VLEO satellite constellation using telecom operators’ 5G millimetre wave (mmWave) spectrum.ย  TDF and CTO taken together are reiterating their will to meet changing market needs and actively support the global vision of connectivity.

ย An ambition shared by all: creating resilient and hybrid connectivity for telecom operators

Terrestrial and space-based connectivity is starting to combine and presents fresh chances for telecommunication companies.ย  By means of a shared, neutral, space-based infrastructure in Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO), CTO presents a creative answer to this problem, therefore removing the need for each telecom operator to make significant space investments to increase network coverage.

ย Just as they do today with terrestrial networks, this solution lets operators use their own 5G mmWave spectrum to provide high-speed, low-latency internet access from spaceโ€”including in rural, remote, or underserved areas.ย  This development marks a change from proprietary constellations introduced by new competitors, giving telecom operators a competitive solution to grab fresh market possibilities motivated by space-based connection.

TDF has decided to collaborate with CTO under this common vision in order to improve its portfolio of solutions, increase its future relevance in connection by including terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks (NTN), and provide creative and strong solutions.

A Technological Cooperation Towards Future Connectivity

Strong technological and industrial complementarity drives the collaboration between CTO and TDF.ย  On the one side, CTO is leading a revolution with its VLEO satellites employing 5G mmWave frequency, therefore providing low-latency, fast internet connectivity from space.ย  Conversely, TDF provides its broad infrastructure, knowledge of building telecom sites, antenna management, and network operations.ย  TDF is also helping CTO validate 5G NTN millimetre wave frequencies in order to maximise satellite and terrestrial network convergence.

Additionally included in the deal is the creation of satellite-based emergency connectivity solutions to guarantee continuous communication in the case of big emergencies or natural disasters.ย  Using inter-satellite links, these systems will enable vital transmissions even in areas devastated by a disaster even if ground-based relay antennas are disabled.
