The Eutelsat Greenland connectivity project has officially entered a new phase as Eutelsat announced its participation in the Enhanced Satellite Connectivity Project for Greenland. Supported by the European Union, the Government of Greenland and the Government of Denmark, this initiative aims to extend reliable LEO connectivity to rural and remote communities across the country where terrestrial networks remain extremely challenging to deploy.
The project was launched at Eutelsat’s ground station in Greenland in the presence of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, underscoring the strategic significance of the effort for all parties involved.
OneWeb LEO Deployment in Partnership with Tusass
Under the project, Eutelsat will provide OneWeb Low Earth Orbit connectivity in partnership with Tusass, Greenland’s national telecommunications provider and the lead partner for the initiative. The two companies share a longstanding relationship, and this latest collaboration will focus on extending reliable communications to remote settlements and critical infrastructure in some of the most geographically and climatically demanding areas on Earth.
Eutelsat’s OneWeb constellation operates in polar orbit, making it particularly well suited for high-latitude regions like Greenland and the broader Arctic. The constellation delivers high-speed, low-latency remote connectivity at latitudes where conventional satellite systems often struggle to perform. By bringing this capability to more communities, the Eutelsat Greenland connectivity project is set to support digital inclusion priorities while reinforcing resilient Greenland telecommunications infrastructure in a strategically important region.
The European Union’s backing for the project reflects its broader commitment to strengthening sovereignty and resilience in critical infrastructure. By supporting a European satellite provider to deliver essential LEO connectivity in Greenland, the initiative helps ensure that critical communications across Europe and the Arctic are underpinned by European capabilities.
Broader European Satellite Cooperation
The project also brings together wider European satellite capabilities, including those of Hispasat, and builds on the cooperation between partners within SpaceRISE, the consortium delivering the EU’s IRISยฒ secure connectivity programme. Eutelsat serves as a core partner in SpaceRISE and will contribute its OneWeb satellite LEO capabilities to the IRISยฒ programme.
