A new initiative in Romania is set to optimize the use of backup power assets through a collaborative telecom grid energy storage project. The solution integrates an artificial intelligence optimization platform from Bamboo Energy, Romanian market access provided by Flexumers, and advanced equipment from Huawei.

Transforming Passive Assets into Active Resources

Historically, telecommunications networks have relied on decentralized batteries exclusively as backup power during outages. These assets typically remain idle, representing a passive operating expense for operators. This partnership aims to convert these existing assets into a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) to operate in balancing markets and generate new revenue streams.

The platform will dynamically manage the charge and discharge cycles based on real-time market requirements. The initial deployment involves a select number of batteries at telecommunications sites, with plans to expand the telecom grid energy storage solution across the national network.

Industry Perspectives on the Initiative

Bamboo Energy

“This collaboration marks a turning point for the industry,” said Manel Sanmartรญ, CEO of Bamboo Energy. “By proving that distributed telecom batteries can participate in complex balancing markets, we are not only helping operators offset costs but also providing the Romanian grid with the flexibility it needs to integrate more renewable energy.”

Huawei Romania

Yao Fengting, CEO of Huawei Romania, stated: “Huawei integrates digital and power electronics technologies, drives intelligent transformation through high-quality products, and continuously develops innovative energy infrastructure solutions for the digital industry. Through this collaboration, we aim to accelerate the green energy transition, support the sustainable development of telecom operators, contribute to grid stability, and help pave the way toward a greener, better future.”

Flexumers

“Demand response is becoming one of the most powerful tools for building a more resilient and flexible energy system,” said Marius Chiriac, Founder of Flexumers. “Through this partnership, we are demonstrating that assets originally designed for backup purposes can actively support grid stability while creating new value for their owners. By combining Flexumers’ aggregation and market expertise with Huawei’s technology and Bamboo Energy’s optimization platform, we are taking another important step toward making distributed flexibility a commercial reality in Romania.”

A Milestone for Distributed Infrastructure

This project represents the first Virtual Power Plant for a Distributed Energy Storage System in telecom sites within the region. It marks a practical step in the valorization of critical infrastructure, utilizing telecom infrastructure, grid connectivity, and advanced energy management to maximize storage utility.
