Cloud and Edge Networks Accelerated by Optical Links

The synergy between centralized data centers and decentralized edge nodes is critical for the next wave of digital transformation. By utilizing high-capacity optical links, operators are achieving the ultra-low latency and massive data transfer speeds required to support real-time applications and seamless global connectivity across diverse industries.

Optical Sensing Technologies Advancing Smart Networks

The integration of sophisticated sensors into the global fiber optic footprint is turning passive cables into an active, intelligent nervous system. These optical sensing technologies provide real-time monitoring of physical environments, enhancing the security and efficiency of smart networks while offering a scalable solution for modern telecom infrastructure health.

High Speed Data Centers Leveraging Optical Interconnects

The rapid expansion of cloud computing and artificial intelligence has pushed traditional data center architectures to their physical limits. By replacing copper-based connections with high-performance optical interconnects, modern facilities are achieving the throughput and efficiency required to handle massive workloads while maintaining the scalability necessary for future enterprise IT growth.

SK Telecom has entered into a comprehensive integrated procurement agreement with Schneider Electric for the supply of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) equipment and solutions for the installation of the SK AIDC in Ulsan.

Schneider Electric is globally recognized for its expertise in MEP infrastructure for artificial intelligence data centers (AIDCs). The company provides end-to-end solutions that cover everything from design and construction to operations.

The agreement between SK Telecom and Schneider Electric is the first tangible outcome of the partnership announced at Mobile World Congress 2025 (MWC25).  As a part of this agreement, Schneider Electric will deliver MEP equipment in five categories, including switchgear, transformers, Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), and automated control systems, all of which will be deployed to support the Ulsan center.

In addition, SK Telecom will incorporate Schneider Electric’s Electrical Transient Analyzer Program (ETAP) into its unified AI Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) system. ETAP, a top digital twin solution for power systems, covers design, analysis, and operation.

The AI DCIM platform offers software and tools for real-time monitoring and management of power consumption and infrastructure utilization. With this agreement, SK Telecom seeks to enhance the capabilities of its AI DCIM solution.

Cooperation between SK Telecom and Schneider Electric has led to formation of a working group to collaborate on multiple areas including:

  • SKT AI DCIM & Schneider Automated Control Systems: To pursue integration and commercialization of SK Telecom’s unified AI DCIM with Schneider Electric’s automated control systems.
  • MEP Reference Designs: To develop MEP reference designs and jointly execute data center design and construction services.
  • Prefabricated Solutions: To create prefabricated and integrated solutions to significantly reduce construction timelines.
  • Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS): To expand collaborative sales initiatives to grow their EaaS business.

The firms also entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to extend this partnership across the SK Group. Plans include joint development of UPS and Energy Storage System (ESS) technologies backed by SK On’s lithium-ion battery technologies.
