Nokia and Boldyn Networks have rolled out a private 5G network at Callio FutureMINE in Pyhรคjรคrvi, Finland, turning one of Europeโ€™s deepest mines into a testing ground for mining innovation. The site, which operated as a copper mine for more than 60 years, now offers a real-world environment for companies to test and validate their equipment.

Connectivity underground is extremely difficult. Mines have complex tunnel infrastructure, hostile environments, and continuous human and equipment movement, all of which cumulatively create conditions unsuitable for stable communications. Boldyn’s 5G platform, based on the Nokia Modular Private Wireless (MPW), is designed to operate in harsh mining conditions. The network spans several kilometers of tunnels, down to depths of up to 1.5 kilometers, and delivers high bandwidth and ultra-low latency. It enables sophisticated mining applications, which ensure that operations can be done more efficiently and safely.

โ€œAt Callio, weโ€™re redefining whatโ€™s possible in mining. With the right technology, operations can be fully managed from the surface, making mining not only smarter, but significantly safer. Our mission is to transform this unique 1.5-kilometer-deep site into a world-class testbed where the next generation of automation and safety solutions can be developed and validated. In mining, connectivity is critical. Our private 5G network delivers real-time data and ultra-low latency, ensuring every person and asset is visible and protected. Downtime is expensive. Manual processes are risky. With private 5G, weโ€™re solving both.โ€ said Henrik Kiviniemi, Managing Director, Callio Pyhรคjรคrvi.

The facility is already being used to test next-generation technologies.

  • Autonomous and tele-remote vehicles operate from the surface, reducing risk to personnel and improving equipment use.
  • Workers now communicate instantly across all mine levels, thanks to the replacement of old walkie-talkie systems with reliable 5G mobile connectivity.
  • Cybercube is using the network for integrated 3D mapping, real-time positioning, and operational control, creating a digital twin of the mine. This helps monitor personnel, vehicles, and equipment, improving situational awareness and safety where GPS signals cannot reach.

โ€œWe have designed and deployed a seamless private 5G network, based on Nokia technology at the Callio site. The network delivers seamless connectivity and full coverage across multiple underground mining levels. Itโ€™s the backbone of Callioโ€™s vision for a fully automated test mine, supporting everything from tele-remote vehicles to real-time control of underground machinery. Weโ€™re enabling mining companies to test and develop next-generation solutions against a reliable network in realistic conditions, without disrupting live operations.โ€ said Jaakko Kuukka, Country Manager Nordics, Boldyn Networks.
