Eutelsat and SES are set to receive approximately $6.1 billion in combined compensation under the U.S. Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) C band spectrum clearing programme. The initiative represents a major milestone in reallocating valuable spectrum resources to support the expansion of wireless networks across the United States while ensuring uninterrupted satellite services.

The FCC’s latest framework enables satellite operators to relocate their operations from designated portions of the C band spectrum, making 160 megahertz of capacity available for mobile network operators. This C band spectrum clearing effort is expected to accelerate 5G deployment, strengthen network performance, and address the growing demand for high-speed connectivity nationwide.

FCC Advances C band Spectrum Clearing for Next-Generation Networks

The FCC’s regulatory framework establishes a structured approach to C band spectrum clearing, balancing the needs of satellite services with the rapid expansion of terrestrial wireless networks. By reallocating spectrum resources, the agency is creating 160 megahertz of capacity that telecommunications providers can use to enhance existing 5G infrastructure and support future wireless technologies.

The additional spectrum is expected to improve network capacity, increase data speeds, and deliver more reliable connectivity for businesses and consumers. The initiative also reinforces the FCC’s broader objective of maximising spectrum efficiency while enabling continued investment in advanced telecommunications infrastructure.

Compensation Tied to Spectrum Transition Milestones

Under the approved framework, SES is expected to receive approximately $5.6 billion, while Eutelsat will receive around $504 million in pre-tax compensation for completing its obligations under the C band spectrum clearing programme.

The payments are linked to the successful migration of existing satellite services from the designated frequencies. The FCC has established transition deadlines in 2030 and 2031, requiring both operators to complete the relocation while maintaining uninterrupted service for customers throughout the process.

Transition Costs Covered Under FCC Framework

In addition to the compensation payments, both satellite operators will receive reimbursement for eligible transition costs associated with relocating their networks. These transition costs include technical upgrades, equipment replacement, network modifications, engineering work, and other operational changes required to complete the migration.

Covering these transition costs helps ensure that operators can comply with regulatory requirements without bearing the full financial burden of the spectrum relocation.

The successful C band spectrum clearing programme highlights the collaboration between regulators, satellite operators, and telecommunications providers to maximise spectrum utilisation. By freeing 160 megahertz of capacity for expanding wireless networks while safeguarding satellite services, the initiative supports long-term investment in digital infrastructure and strengthens the foundation for future wireless connectivity across the United States.
