Furukawa Electric has unveiled a substantial fibre network investment plan valued at approximately 100 billion yen, or around US$635 million, aimed at expanding optical fibre and rollable ribbon cable production capacity across four countries. The Japanese industrial and electrical services company confirmed that the investment will target facilities in India, Brazil, the United States and Japan, responding to surging demand driven largely by the artificial intelligence hyperscaler industry.
Mass production resulting from this fibre network investment is scheduled to commence progressively from the second half of the financial year 2028 onward, according to the company.
Rising Demand From AI and Cloud Services
The announcement comes against the backdrop of rapid adoption of generative AI and the increasing sophistication of cloud services, which have together fuelled robust and sustained growth across the global data centre market. Furukawa noted that infrastructure investments centred on hyperscale data centres have intensified in recent years, and demand for high-quality optical fibre cables is expected to grow significantly over the medium to long term as a result.
The company also highlighted that demand for rollable ribbon cables, which are designed to accommodate high-capacity optical transmission, remains strong. The current order environment for these products is favourable, and further growth in demand is anticipated over the medium-to-long term. This trend has been a key driver behind the scale of the fibre network investment now being committed.
By channelling resources into expanded production, Furukawa is positioning itself to serve a market where the need for advanced optical connectivity infrastructure continues to accelerate. The fibre network investment reflects the broader industry pattern of telecommunications and technology firms scaling up manufacturing to keep pace with hyperscaler requirements.
Investment Details for India and Brazil
In India, Furukawa operates through Birla Furukawa Fibre Optics Limited, a joint venture company established together with Universal Cables Limited. The joint venture has its registered office and manufacturing facilities located in Goa. Furukawa confirmed that the fibre network investment directed towards Birla Furukawa Fibre Optics Limited will be subject to mutual agreement with Universal Cables Limited on the relevant terms.
In Brazil, the company plans to upgrade facilities at its Lightera LatAm division. This expansion will strengthen the company’s footprint in Latin America, a region where communications infrastructure development has been gathering momentum.
Furukawa stated that by offering high-performance and differentiated products through this fibre network investment programme, it intends to contribute to the further evolution of data centres that support the advancement of generative AI. The company also emphasised its commitment to supporting the development of the rapidly growing communications infrastructure sector more broadly.
What Comes Next
The phased rollout of expanded capacity is set to begin in the second half of the financial year 2028, with production scaling progressively from that point. The fibre network investment represents one of the larger commitments made by a single manufacturer to optical fibre and cable expansion in recent months, underscoring the scale of infrastructure build-out now under way to meet the demands of AI-driven workloads and next-generation cloud services.
