Amazon Leo has signed a new agreement with UZ-SAT, an affiliate of Uzbekistanโs leading telecom operator Uztelecom, to expand satellite internet access across the country. Under the arrangement, UZ-SAT will become an authorised distributor of Amazon Leo and use the companyโs satellite network to develop connectivity solutions for customers in areas where terrestrial networks are difficult or costly to deploy.
The agreement gives LEO satellite connectivity a role alongside existing fibre and telecom infrastructure as Uzbekistan seeks to extend digital services to remote communities and businesses. Uztelecom currently reaches 96% of communities and operates around 378,000 kilometres of fibre-optic infrastructure, but the countryโs mountainous areas and remote desert locations can present challenges for conventional network expansion.
Satellite Network to Complement Terrestrial Infrastructure
Amazon Leoโs LEO satellite connectivity is designed to provide internet access beyond the reach of traditional terrestrial networks. The system is being built around an initial constellation of more than 3,000 satellites, supported by a network of ground gateway antennas and dedicated fibre infrastructure.
Through the agreement, UZ-SAT will use LEO satellite connectivity to create and deliver new connectivity services for customers. The arrangement is particularly relevant for locations where extending fibre or other terrestrial infrastructure may require significant investment because of geography or distance.
Amazon Leo also offers a range of customer terminals, including Nano, Pro and Ultra variants, intended for different connectivity requirements. For telecom operators, the ability to combine satellite infrastructure with established networks can provide another option for reaching locations that are difficult to serve through fixed infrastructure alone.
Uzbekistan Adds Satellite Technology to Digital Expansion
The new agreement places LEO satellite connectivity within Uzbekistanโs broader digital infrastructure development programme. The announcement was made during the Tashkent International Investment Forum alongside ICT Week Uzbekistan 2026, as the country continues efforts to expand digital infrastructure and connectivity.
Amazon Leo has launched nearly 400 satellites to date and is currently testing its service with employees and selected enterprise customers through a private preview. The company expects to begin initial service rollout in certain locations later in 2026, with coverage and network capacity expected to expand as additional satellites are launched.
For UZ-SAT, LEO satellite connectivity will provide an additional technology layer alongside its existing infrastructure. The company plans to use the service to improve access in locations where terrestrial deployment is limited, while maintaining its wider telecommunications network.
The development remains at the agreement and service-preparation stage rather than representing a completed nationwide deployment. LEO satellite connectivity is therefore being positioned as a complementary infrastructure option that could extend internet access to businesses and communities in parts of Uzbekistan that remain difficult to reach through conventional networks.
