Eutelsat has completed its first rail connectivity trial in Poland using its OneWeb low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite network aboard a long-distance passenger train operating on PKP Intercityโ€™s live rail network. The test evaluated how LEO rail connectivity can support passenger and operational communications while a train travels at up to 160 km/h.

The trial was led by ACO Solutions as systems integrator, with Hispasat acting as distribution partner alongside Eutelsat. Conducted on routes linking Kozล‚รณw, Warszawa and Tczew, the test used a Kymeta Kestrel u5 terminal that has received rail certification from TรœV Rheinland.

Testing Satellite Links on an Active Rail Network

The Kestrel u5 terminal is designed for mobile rail environments and carries an IP69K rating for protection in demanding operating conditions. It also has average power consumption of less than 100W. During the trial, Eutelsat evaluated LEO rail connectivity on a live railway network and collected performance data while assessing switching between satellite and terrestrial connectivity throughout the journey.

This approach is important for rail operators because communications requirements extend beyond passenger internet access. The tested solution is designed to combine OneWeb satellite connectivity with existing rail communications infrastructure, supporting passenger connectivity, operational communications and data services. LEO rail connectivity can also interface with onboard and trackside systems, helping maintain links between field operations and railway control centres.

Supporting Future Passenger and Freight Operations

The trial also tested the potential role of LEO rail connectivity across both passenger and freight rail services. By combining satellite links with existing communications infrastructure, the solution is intended to provide rail operators with additional connectivity options across routes where consistent terrestrial coverage can be challenging.

For passenger services, the technology can support connectivity needs while trains remain in motion. For railway operations, the same infrastructure can support communications and data exchange between onboard equipment, trackside systems and operations centres. The live test therefore provides a practical setting for assessing how LEO rail connectivity can function alongside established terrestrial networks. This is particularly relevant as rail operators expand digital services and require communications systems that can support both onboard applications and operational requirements across moving trains.

Eutelsat said the successful trial demonstrates the ability of its OneWeb network to support rail connectivity in real operating conditions. The company and its partners can now use the performance data gathered during the test to further assess the technology for rail applications in Poland and other markets.

The development remains a trial rather than a commercial rollout across Polandโ€™s railway network. However, the completion of the test on an active long-distance service provides a concrete demonstration of how LEO rail connectivity can be evaluated for future rail communications and data requirements.
