Owners of Android powered smartphones can now use the official Wikipedia app to access Wikipedia’s database that has over 20 million articles in more than 280 languages.

This new app can be downloaded from Android Market for free and it be installed on devices running Android 2.2 Froyo and onward. Besides accessing a huge database users can also save articles to read them afterwards on offline mode, share articles and find entries on the basis of location.
Android users can also read specific articles in any language without having to change the language of Wikipedia as a whole, reports PC Mag. This app has been available since last week. This past Wednesday when the website observed a 24 hour blackout to support anti SOPA and PIPA movement Android owners were able to access the website through their smartphones. Earlier, Wikipedia was accessible only through iPhone the app has been available since 2009. The website also has its own mobile website. Considered a source of large amounts of information, Wikipedia is very popular all over the world. Being able to access the site via smartphone is exciting news.
