Non-Terrestrial Networks Expanding Telecom Infrastructure

Non-terrestrial networks are redefining the boundaries of global connectivity by incorporating satellites, high-altitude platforms, and drones into the existing cellular framework. This expansion addresses the inherent limitations of ground-based towers, offering a resilient and comprehensive solution for rural coverage, emergency communications, and disaster recovery on a worldwide scale.

Satellite Integration Accelerating 5G and 6G Networks

Modern telecommunications are undergoing a profound shift as space-based assets merge with terrestrial cellular infrastructure to deliver ubiquitous high-speed connectivity. This evolution addresses the geographical limitations of traditional base stations, creating a unified global network capable of supporting the next generation of mobile technology and massive machine-type communications.

Satellite Backhaul Enabling Scalable Telecom Operations

Satellite backhaul has emerged as a cornerstone of modern network design, providing a flexible and cost-effective alternative to terrestrial fiber and microwave links. This technology allows telecom operators to bypass the physical constraints of ground-based infrastructure, facilitating rapid expansion into rural and underserved markets while maintaining a high standard of data transmission and service reliability.

On January 13, 2026, RANsemi Limited, a British wireless semiconductor company specializing in Open RAN baseband technologies and Radisys® Corporation, a global leader in open telecom software, announced a further expansion of their long-standing partnership in order to advance the next-gen 5G solutions for much tactical as well as mission-critical communications, offering defence, security and also public-safety operators more dependable, flexible and also rapidly deployable connectivity when operations demand it.

This partnership, which builds on proven interoperability along with successful joint rollouts, brings together the software-defined baseband platforms of RANsemi and the mature and award-winning 3GPP Release 18 compliant 5G RAN and Core software that includes NTN, RedCap, Non-3GPP Access, etc. from Radisys in order to deliver a protected, strong and fast-deployable 5G system. This kind of mixed solution is targeted at defence, security, and also other environments that demand reliability and flexibility along with fast setup and where the extension when it comes to standard 5G products is needed. Radisys, goes on to support 5G RAN and Core software that run together as an all-in-a-box solution.

Through mixing a software-defined baseband from RANsemi with the proven 5G RAN and Core software from Radisys, the joint platform offers an adaptable foundation for private 5G networks, and in the most demanding conditions. What it does is that it supports field rollout throughout the land, sea, and air domains and also builds a solid path for emerging capabilities such as AI-enabled RAN optimization along with integrated sensing, which are key elements of the next phase of mission-ready networks.

According to VP of Marketing, RANsemi, Oliver Davies, “Mission-critical networks need to be secure, deployable, and able to adapt to rapidly changing conditions, and our collaboration with Radisys delivers exactly that – a flexible and robust 5G platform that meets the needs of defence, public safety, and security users.”

Munish Chhabra, Head of the Mobility Software and Services Business Unit at Radisys, says, “Our expanded partnership with RANsemi supports customers who need robust and efficient RAN systems beyond traditional commercial use, and together we are enabling deployment models essential to mission-critical communications, where resilience and trusted performance are vital.”

Notably, RANsemi and Radisys are going to continue to collaborate on extending features for tactical as well as mission-critical next-gen 5G solutions along with programme engagements throughout the spectrum of security, defence, and also certain specialized industrial sectors.
